Open access online Journals for Libraries

Title of the Article : Open access forum : many roads to open access
Authors : Dick Kaser and Marydee Ojala
Source : (www.proquest.upd.edu.ph) Online; Jan/Feb 2005; 29, 1; Academic Research Library pg. 14

Abstract:

This article is about different forums on open access. The forums did not focus on the scholars’ revolt or on policy models for Open Access journals. Instead, the forums were designed to highlight issues that relate directly to librarians and others who use the internet to conduct search.
According to the article, there are many roads to open access. These are the green roads, gold roads, and toll roads. Toll roads refer to open access that is toll- free online access. Green road is self archiving that moves the costs from the user’s institution to the author’s institution. The gold road is the open access journals.

3 Things I Learned:

1. Open access covers many fields not only in librarianship but also in publishing, e- commerce, chemical industry, and field of sciences like physics, chemistry, and medicine.
2. Open access has worldwide appeal like science. Like science it happens everywhere. So, we must give importance to open access like we importance to science.
3. In an open access, still money is an issue. Because you need money as for subscription costs.

Implication / Application:

Open access is very important nowadays. In a digital library, open access is always present. Open access is equated simply with free information. That in a digital library, open access should be a combination of green road, gold road, and toll road. That open access should be toll-free-online, self- archiving, and can access scholarly journals.

User Interfaces of IRs (Visualization)

Author : Shaoyi He
Title : Visualization of Information

Abstract:

This article is about the concept of visualization. Based on the article, visualization is the action or fact with visualizing, the power or process of forming a mental picture or vision of something not actually present to the sight (as defined in the Oxford English Dictionary). Also visualization provides an interface between two powerful information processing systems – human minded and the modern computer. There are 3 ways to
approach the concept of visualization such as pictures of numbers, pictures of nouns, and pictures of verbs.

3 Things I Learned:

1. With the advancement of science and technology, visualization technologies will bring people new ways to
view, analyze, and interact with data information.

2. Object- oriented visualization environments can be built by visual programming with functional objects.

3. Visualization of information has many practical applications related to software, medicine, education, and
     information retrieval.

Application / Implication

Application / implication of the new things I learned to my work is that visualization of information is integrated to computer technology. Nowadays, the application of computer technology can be seen and felt in everything we do. Be it in our house or in our workplace. So, as society and technology advance into the future, the human quest into the nature of visualization and the visualization of information will lead to a better understanding of the relationships between information, visualization, technology, and the  natural world.

Intellectual Rights and Copyright Issues

Title of the Article: The missing link: the lack of citations and copyright notices in multimedia
    presentations
Author: Stephanie Huffman
URL : http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?index=0&did=995467011&SrchMode=1&sid=1&Fmt=6&VInst=PROD&VType=PQD&RQT=309&VName=PQD&TS=1310828898&clientId=51710

Abstract:

This article covers a brief overview of copyright law, provides elpful resources for students and teachers, and outlines a model that can be used in citing sources of media presentations. This has also two purposes: 1) to provide some basic background information in intellectual property; and 2) to share a guide/model for citing sources in a multimedia presentation. Thus, this article for addressing the two major reasons for the lack of citations.

According to the article, the teachers must teach and demand the students to give credit for the use of text, image, video, and audio for their media presentations which often we allow or overlook that they do not give credit for the use of other's work.

3 Things I Learned:

1. As teachers/librarians, we must teach and demand our students to cite their sources of presentations, otherwise plagiarism is occuring.

2. In creating multimedia products, faculty and students may use lawfully acquired copyrighted works as long as proper credit and citations are included in the multimedia product.

3. We must not only copy and paste materials or documents from others. We should also give credit. So, copy + paste, and dont forget to give CREDIT.

Implication / Application:

Care should be used in downloading material from Internet sites. We should be aware that some copyrighted works have been posted to the Internet without authorization of the copyrighted holder. Therefore, it is vital that they contact the primary source to get permission to use the material.

Web 2.0 technology application to Libraries

Title of the Article : Gaming in Libraries 2.0
Author : Katherine Makens
Best Practices : Feature, Summer 2007 : Young Adult Services

Abstract:

This article is about libraries offering massively multiplayer online games / programs for their teens' users. The library is not the only place where gaming can become a social event. And how can we apply Library 2.0 concepts to make gaming events that are truly unique to a library setting.

This article provides examination of me library's experiments with finding a viable options for such program. Such as video game design for teens, game maker, and give teens a ready- made game and then show the teens how to alter the game in interesting ways.

Three Things I Learned:

         1. Based on the article I read, I learned that it is really possible to integrate games in libraries and will give a very positive and educational experience to the users and generate a good turnout.

         2. I learned also that games in libraries will teach the teens useful skills, expose them to a carreer that otherwise they would not have access to.

        3. I learned that gaming in Libraries 2.0 is one way of promoting or marketing libraries.

Implication:

The implication of the new things I learned to me as a person is that students especially teens will learn more when there will be application of games in the libraries. They will not only learn through reading but also through experience. Since, they will learn through experience, this will create a really satisfying understanding on different things.

The Internet and the WWW : implications to Libraries

Title of the Article : Building a Digital Branch
Author : David Lee King
Adapted from the August / September 2009 issue of Library Technology Reports

Abstract:

This article is about putting up a functional library branch - a digital branch- on the web. This is somewhat arbitrary. A branch is a branch, whether it is physical or virtual. With a digital branch, they can go to the library by just visiting the website.

The steps in putting up a digital branch is think, plan, and do.

Three Things I Learned:

1.Based on my readings, I learned that internet becomes more and more faster and has many functions. Web browsers have changed. Websites have come to serve a wider variety of functions.

2.I also learned that, with 21st century technology, libraries are in a position to deliver a fully functional library hence, a digital branch - on the web. But as stated in the article, still "a digital branch must have a real staff, a real building, a real collection, and a real community happening on and it".

3.I also learned that, if ever I will adapt this digital branch in any library, I will need to pick a Content Management System. It is the control center of the site. which allows administer content within the branch, how it is organized, displayed, and accessed; who can access it, and how it can be accessed.

Implication:

The implication of the new things I learned from my reading assignmnet is that, think, plan and do. First, think and as much as possible gather information on the things I want to achieve, second, is plan to meet the goals I dreamed up, and third, build what I planned. But, it does not stop there. Constant work, updates and change are needed because if not, whatever planned achieved will be left behind because of the changing technology.

Computer and Internet Security

Title : More Spam Stuffs Inboxes
Author : Nikki Swartz

Source : Information Management Journal; Mar/Apr 2007; 41, 2; ABI/INFORM Global pg. 6

Abstract:

The article shows that the spam has taken over most e- mail users' inboxes not only here but most especially abroad. Such as U.S. email security company Postini, said 2.5 billion spam messages were sent in June 2006 , Intent security firm surf- control reported that spam increased 50% last year, the Radicati Group predicted that in Europe, spam will jump to 38 billion per day and data for another security firm, Marshall revealed that the majority of spam originates from China, Poland, and the U.S. This only shows that spam is very prevalent nowadays.

3 Things I Learned:

        1. From this article, I learned that spam should not be taken for granted because millions of unwanted e- mails can cost business big bucks.

        2. I also learned that spam costs firms up to $ 1, 000 a year per employee in lost productivity and higher computing bills. This means that spam can really cause destruction to one's lives.

        3. From this reading, I also learned that to be alert once a spam is received. Never open it or even its link because this might have virus that can damage the entire computer and important documents.

Implication / Application:

The application of the new things I learned to me as a person is that if ever I received spam messages, I will be very careful in dealing with it. Because, once I open it, this might damage my entire collection / documents.

Computer Ethics / Netiquette

Title : Computer Fraud and Abuse Act
Author: Debra Ross
Publisher: Encyclopedia of White-Collar and Corporate Crime
URL: http://go.galegroup.com/ps/retrieve.do?sgHitCountType=None&sort=RELEVANCE&inPS=true&prodId=GVRL&userGroupName=phdiliman&tabID=T003&searchId=R1&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&contentSegment=&searchType=BasicSearchForm&currentPosition=1&contentSet=GALE%7CCX3438900117&&docId=GALE|CX3438900117&docType=GALE&role=

Abstract:

The article discusses computer related crime that became more and more prevalent and diverse. The primary federal statute used in combating the various types of computer crime is known as Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). The CFAA includes an extremely expansive definition that includes coverage of all "protected" computers from a wide variety of activities of unauthorized access to and / or theft of information from "protected" computers. It is comprised of sections aimed at defining specific computer- related criminal conduct.

Given that the CFAA is a federal statute, the Federal Sentencing Guidelines govern sentences. The CFAA provides a tool for the criminal justice system to respond to illegal use of  computers.

3 Things I Learned:

       1. I have learned that computer related crimes should not be taken for granted by the government. Like any other crimes, the government must pay attention in solving or stopping this kind of crime.

       2. I also learned that there is no impossible with the advent of technology and has a disadvantage also. Any person who is knowledgeable to computer and with bad interest to others/ groups and are capable to do bad things like creating a computer virus that might infect the whole country as well.

       3. Lastly, I learned that some laws of the most powerful country like the United States (like this one) give very light offense wherein, in fact, this is a serious crime and should be dealt accordingly.

Implication / Application:

The implication of the new things I learned to me as a person is that to be aware all the times. Not only, about computer fraud and abuse act  but also be alert always. Be alert with the people I encounter and be alert with malicious acts of people in my environment.
